Types of heat treatment methods for 321 stainless steel pipe

Mcneil Instrument offers grade 321 stainless steel pipes, which are austenitic steel stabilized with titanium to ensure excellent corrosion resistance. However, the presence of titanium limits its use as a welding consumable due to poor transfer over an electric arc welding procedure, imposing constraints on its application involving heat.

Mcneil Instrument provides annealing as a solution to enhance the material’s corrosion resistance. Annealing involves heating the material to 1065 degrees Celsius followed by water quenching, thereby maximizing corrosion resistance. Additionally, hot bending operations can be conducted within the range of 950 to 1100 degrees Celsius. Although hot bending doesn’t aim to improve mechanical properties, immediate annealing post-bending ensures restoration of corrosion resistance. Moreover, annealing reduces intergranular corrosion during welding and promotes the formation of an oxide layer on the surface, acting as a protective coating against oxidation reactions. Mcneil Instrument also offers various finishing options to further safeguard the surface, complementing the heat treatment process.
